There is no school for this industry. People arrive from a bank branch, a field-service van, a card network or a software vendor, and pick up the rest by being on call. This is the path to hand a new hire: what the machine does, who builds it, what drives it, how a transaction gets its yes, and where the money goes afterwards. One track has video today. After the yes, where does the money go, and why does it take three days?
A card transaction is approved in about a second. The money behind it may not move for three days, and nothing is broken: that delay is the design. Fourteen parts on holds, netting, the rails, reconciliation, chargebacks, ISO 20022 and the PAR, cut from a forty-minute film.
What does the machine actually do, and how much more could it?
Withdraw, deposit, balance, transfer, receipt. Then the list nobody hands a new hire: denominations and bill mix, recycling, preferences, online settlement, cardless access, and the rules that decide which device has to work for the machine to stay open.
Who actually builds a cash machine, and which of them builds what?
Two names on most Western bank machines, a Korean and a Chinese maker behind them, a retail tier built for convenience stores, and a handful of Japanese firms whose modules sit inside everyone else's machine.
What is on the other end of the line, and why does everything stop when it goes away?
In 1979 the industry put the ATM's brain at the host instead of in the box, and it has been living with the consequence ever since: a fault-tolerant computer, a protocol called NDC, and a vocabulary of processor, switch, driver and network that means one thing or four.
What has to happen, and in what order, for a withdrawal to be approved?
A card, a PIN block, an ISO 8583 message, a BIN lookup, a network, an issuer's decision, and a hold. Seven pieces, a few seconds, and no money moved yet.
